The backyard is the main setting of the series. It is a large expanse located near each of the major characters' houses.
Most of the backyard is covered with grass. Several trees, shrubs, and a road are visible behind it. A picnic table, a blue swimming pool, a yellow slide, and a sandbox can be seen in the yard. In the winter, the grass becomes a paler shade of green and the trees lose their leaves. In the animated pilot, a soccer ball and a red bicycle are placed by the sandbox.
The backyard's appearance was significantly different in "Me and My Friends", the unaired live-action pilot. A yellow swing set, a red shack, and a blue fence could be seen in this version of the yard. The slide, which remains in the current version, was colored orange rather than yellow.
The backyard appears in every episode of The Backyardigans. It first appeared in "Me and My Friends", which was not broadcast on television. Its first appearance in an aired episode was in "Pirate Treasure", and its final appearance was in "The Tale of the Not-So-Nice Dragon".
